9/19 - Gagged - Framed Open Edition Photo Enacustic NZ$60

Gagged is an open edition photo encaustic artwork that explores the delicate intersection of vulnerability, identity, and concealment. Created from my original black and white photograph, the image is encased beneath layers of molten beeswax, softening its edges and imbuing it with an ethereal, timeworn presence.

The partially obscured figure offers only fragments of a story. Fishnet textures, leather, and shadow contrast with the softness of skin, creating a visual dialogue between strength and fragility. Rather than presenting a fixed narrative, the work invites quiet contemplation, encouraging each viewer to interpret its symbolism through their own experiences.

The encaustic medium enhances the photograph with rich surface texture and subtle luminosity, allowing light to interact with the wax to reveal new details over time. Framed in black, the monochrome palette lends the piece a timeless, cinematic quality that complements both contemporary and traditional interiors.

Hand-finished using the ancient encaustic process, each artwork possesses unique variations within the wax surface, making every piece subtly individual despite being an
open edition.
